Dear Black women – Autumn is here: Time to take your Vitamin D supplement.
Darker days and darker skin means that we need to take Vitamin D throughout the year and also consider a higher dose, than the standard amount for people with white skin.
Whether it’s for your immune system, bones, teeth, hormone health or to support you with a low mood or manage depression, vitamin D is a very important for our bodies. I recently read that it also helps with hair growth too. Some studies are also investigating whether vitamin D can help to prevent fibroids – something alot of us Black women struggle with.
What does the science say?
The science says that Vitamin D is created in the body when we’re outdoors and sunlight penetrates our skin. But it’s more difficult for vitamin D to be created when you have darker skin, as the sun cannot penetrate our skin as easily. So, us darker skin people may not make as much vitamin D naturally and this can cause health problems.
Where can you get your Vitamin D from?
So if you do not already take vitamin D, please start taking a supplement and also eat vitamin D rich foods like salmon, mushrooms, egg yokes and oily fish.
So yes Black women, do your research and find a decent quality Vitamin D supplement. Please take it all year round; don’t forget the mainstream health guidance which is created for people with white skin, doesn’t advise the higher doses we need, especially when we live in countries with limited sunshine (like the UK!).
If you want to read more information about Vitamin D, take a look at the NHS website.
Take care of yourself this Autumn and Winter and the healthier you are, the more you can enjoy your Blessed life. You deserve full health. Stay Blessed & Well 🙂
