Dear Black women, the days of Summer are disappearing. If you’re like me and living in the UK, you can count the number of times on one hand that you got to wear your open toed shoes or your favourite Summer outfit! While I console myself, I have to admit I like Autumn. The thought of golden leaves of trees and staying snug at home – love it 🙂

Before we get into Autumn, I’ve been thinking about the tools we can use to help us Black women move into this new season. One of the first things I think is to create your own Self-care Box. This is a box of some of my favourite things which I intend to enjoy after a long day or when it’s a cold grey weekend.

Why did I create a Self-care Box?

Sometimes you can just feel like you’ve had enough! You know when your boss has wound you up, too many competing deadlines or it feels like there’s not enough hours in the day. In a world that likes to take from us Black women and doesn’t always give back we need to create ‘spaces’ that are just for us. So, for me it’s about having some items in my own personal space that I value and enjoy. Something that creates peace and joy.

What have I included in my Autumn Self-care Box

  • Fluffy pair of socks.
  • Body scrub.
  • Body butter.
  • Body buffer – for circulation.
  • Bath bomb.
  • Scented candle and votive glass.
  • Some positive affirmations – for example words that are positive and good for my mind and spirit.

You noticed the theme here! I take my pampering at home very seriously 🙂

I also had some ideas on other things I could include in my Self-care Box. If you’re looking for ideas, you can give them a try:

  • A soft scarf or blanket
  • Handcream
  • Favourite coffee or tea
  • Chocolate (yes chocolate is Self-care!)
  • Pictures or precious items – for example photos that bring you joy
  • Notes or a journal to give you a place to write your thoughts down. Also any old journals to help you reflect.

So, whether it’s a grey day or when the world and the news reports just feel like too much to take, I’ll be heading to my Self-care Box.

Have you created a Self-care Box? Have you created it for Autumn or for any other time? If you haven’t created a Box, are you going to create one?
